Today, Harry and I went to a really cool park near our house, with one of those splash pads with funky ways for water to shoot out. This was not our first visit to this park, although it's a new-ish park. Our first visit was with our playgroup, and the intention was to dress our kiddos in bathing suits for the purpose of running around on the splash pad. Oddly enough that day, Harry wasn't that interested, even when it was 90-something degrees outside.
It was a cool morning today, but the sun was starting to make an appearance to where I had to change Harry into a short-sleeved shirt before letting him loose on the playground. I didn't expect the splash pad to be on because of the cooler weather, but alas, it was. So here's my child, fully clothed with no swim diaper in sight. We start off by eating snack next to the playground, but Harry has already seen the water on the other side of the park. He finishes snack and takes off for the water. When we get there, I stand my ground and tell him he can't go in. He fights me and whines, and I have to hold my 30 pounder back from lunging into the water. Another mom was standing there with a little boy about Harry's age. She looks at me, shrugs her shoulders and says, "What are you going to do?" Her little boy had already taken his plunge. So I let go of my child's body, and Harry runs full speed through the water. This is my same son who wanted nothing to do with this water when he was in his bathing suit in blazing hot weather. No, that would have been too obvious an occasion for getting soaking wet!
So note to self in the future: 1) Have towel in car-always, 2) Having an extra change of clothes wouldn't hurt either, and 3) Don't take child to splash pad when not wanting him to get wet : ) Lesson learned!

More potty humor
I warn anyone reading this with any regularity that this blog may contain a ton of potty humor in the next several months! So this week, there was one incident that was particularly funny...but only after the fact. So I've been following some suggestions from the book, "Diaper-Free Before Three" to begin potty training with Harry. I love what this pediatrician has to say about reviewing all the literature out there from past generations up through present day about toilet training. It's truly fascinating. Anyway, Harry has potty time certain times of the day to get accumstomed to sitting on the potty. After potty time one day this week, he simply refused my attempt to put a diaper back on. So I decided to call his bluff and put training pants on him just to see how he'd react the first time he could feel pee or poop in an entirely new way!
Within 30 minutes, I could smell something. However, Harry gave me no signals that he had gone to the bathroom. In fact, he was so into his play that a huge battle ensued over me trying to look into his training pants. And sure enough, he had not just pee-peed and poo-pooed...oh no, he had diarrhea!! What was most disconcerting was how he was absolutely unfazed by what was in his pants. Needless to say, after a very disgusting clean-up process, I made the decision to wait a little longer before trying training pants again. My son had totally won the potty training battle for the week : )

Pee-pee
I have to document this somewhere right? On August 10th, 2011, my son pee-peed in the potty for the first time...whoo-hoo! And the funniest part was how adamant he was to say goodbye to the pee-pee when we flushed it down the toilet : )

Turtles vs. Tiger
We went to the zoo today, which is something we do fairly often since it's right up the road from our house. Harry has this infatuation with turtles right now, which is really cute most days. We were going to the zoo with a particular goal today-to see the new baby giraffe. Our zoo has a great African safari section with the expected giraffes, zebras, rhino, lions and elephants. Strangely enough, there's a good sized exhibit in the middle of this African safari section just for tortoises. Harry always loves to look at the tortoises, shouting out, "Turtle! Turtle!" But he spends a couple of minutes looking at them, and we move on. Not today. Today, we spent probably 20 minutes in this section. That may not seem like a long time to anyone else, but 20 minutes is a long time to watch turtles. Believe me. We finally got him to move on to see the really cool baby giraffe that we went to the zoo to see. We then move on to the next section of the zoo, which has another of Harry's favorite animals...the tiger. The tiger isn't always doing something exciting. He likes to sleep. But today, he was walking around, and we had the perfect vantage point to watch. Guess where Harry's attention is? On the really cool tiger walking around, right? Nope. There's another small tortoise exhibit right next to the tiger exhibit. Yep...you guessed it. Everyone is crowding around us, staring at the tiger walking around, and my child is screaming, "Turtle! Turtle!" Andrew and I are wondering if we should save our money on renewing our zoo membership next year, and buy Harry a box turtle instead!

Obviously, blogging is not my thing...

So, I really want to be one of those moms who has an awesome blog that friends and family can read in order to keep up with what we're doing on a daily/weekly basis. But here I am writing my 2nd post of 2011 and it's August. Epic, epic FAIL on my part.
I had a very small epiphany the other day. Harry does something hilarious (if not several things) on a daily basis. So maybe I could record that hilarious action on a daily or weekly basis, which seems easy enough. Based on my blogging record, I'm not guaranteeing anything, but I'm at least going to try. So if you're one of the three people still checking this from time to time, tune in for some Harry humor!
For today, I'm simply adding some recent pics of the little man, who isn't so little anymore. All 35 pounds of him. That's right...35 pounds and he's not even 2. My favorite picture is of him in the pink cowboy boots...yep, pink. They're his cousin's boots, but he was absolutely fascinated with them. Andrew said it will be the perfect rehearsal dinner picture down the road!

Six months later...

I realize it's been almost six months since I posted anything, and I have no excuses! So here are a few pics to catch you up with our growing boy. Since he turned 1, Harry's had his first trick-or-treating experience, we've had family pictures taken, Christmas toy explosion, an ice storm and Harry's first hair cut. I hope to do better in getting pictures up more often, but I'm not promising anything : ) Enjoy the pictures!
